Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place in Edinburgh every August.

In American folklore, the hodag is a fearsome critter resembling a large bull-horned carnivore with a row of thick curved spines down its back. The hodag was said to be born from the ashes of cremated oxen, as the incarnation of the accumulation of abuse the animals had suffered at the hands of their masters.[1] The history of the hodag is strongly tied to Rhinelander, Wisconsin, where it was claimed to have been discovered. The hodag has figured prominently in early Paul Bunyan stories.
In 1893, newspapers reported the discovery of a hodag in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. The articles claimed the hodag had "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end". The reports were instigated by well-known Wisconsin land surveyor, timber cruiser and prankster Eugene Shepard, who rounded up a group of local people to capture the animal. The group reported that they needed to use dynamite to kill the beast.
A photograph of the remains of the charred beast was released to the media. It was "the fiercest, strangest, most frightening monster ever to set razor sharp claws on the earth. It became extinct after its main food source, all white bulldogs, became scarce in the area.
The Hodag County Festival—known to locals and attendees alike as just “Hodag”—is an annual music festival that welcomes some of country’s top performers to the Northwoods of Wisconsin. The event has been held in Rhinelander since 1978 and has welcomed everyone from Darius Rucker and Eric Church to Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson.

The roots of the Notting Hill Carnival that took shape in the mid-1960s had two separate but connected strands. A "Caribbean Carnival" was held on 30 January 1959[7] in St Pancras Town Hall as a response to the problematic state of race relations at the time; the UK's first widespread racial attacks, the Notting Hill race riots in which 108 people were charged,[8] had occurred the previous year.
The 1959 event, held indoors and televised by the BBC, was organised by the Trinidadian journalist and activist Claudia Jones, often described as "the mother of the Notting Hill Carnival"[9] in her capacity as editor of influential black newspaper The West Indian Gazette, and directed by Edric Connor. It showcased elements of a Caribbean carnival in a cabaret style. It featured the Mighty Terror singing the calypso "Carnival at St Pancras", The Southlanders, Cleo Laine, the Trinidad All Stars and Hi–fi steel bands dance troupe, finishing with a Caribbean Carnival Queen beauty contest and a Grand Finale Jump-Up by West Indians who attended the event

Stonehedge Holiday

Stonehenge is a prehistoric megalithic structure on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, two miles (3 km) west of Amesbury. It consists of an outer ring of vertical sarsen standing stones, each around 13 feet (4.0 m) high, seven feet (2.1 m) wide, and weighing around 25 tons, topped by connecting horizontal lintel stones. Inside is a ring of smaller bluestones. Inside these are free-standing trilithons, two bulkier vertical sarsens joined by one lintel. The whole monument, now ruinous, is aligned towards the sunrise on the summer solstice and sunset on the winter solstice. The stones are set within earthworks in the middle of the densest complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred tumuli (burial mounds).

Russian White Nights Festival

The White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg, also known as the Star of the White Nights Festival, was started by Anatoly Sobchak in 1993. Sobchak was the first mayor of St. Petersburg, and during his tenure, the city evolved into Russia’s cultural and sporting hub. As part of his initiative to develop the city, he developed the idea of a holiday to celebrate Russian culture, especially art and entertainment. The festival had a series of classical ballet and music, opera, and other events at the Mariinsky Theater and Mariinsky Concert Hall.
The Scarlet Sails celebration is the final and best-attended part of the White Nights Festival. It is the most famous public event in St. Petersburg. The spectacular fireworks displays and elaborate performances bring the city to a standstill. The Scarlet Sails — ‘Alye Parusa’ in Russian — has been around since the 1960s and began after World War II when schools in Russia united to celebrate the end of their academic year. The celebration organized in their honor took place on the Neva banks in St. Petersburg. The practice was stopped in 1979 but was revived decades later on June 24, 2005.
In 1990, the White Nights International Marathon and 10K Run through the streets of St. Petersburg became part of the festivities. Over 5,000 runners participated in these events each year, which helped promote the city’s status as Russia’s sports capital. The White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg has grown in popularity across Europe, with other E.U. nations introducing their versions of the holiday to their citizens.
Maine Lobster Fest

It was known that a lobster festival held in Nova Scotia was a big success, and it was then suggested that this activity might be the answer for the community. In addition, it was suggested that it was time the Maine lobster and the Maine lobster fishermen came into their own. On that basis the Camden-Rockport Lobster Festival was conceived as being the logical type of festival for this area.
It all began at a gathering of a group of citizens and summer folk in March of 1947, where a discussion arose as to what could be done about reviving the summer activities that Camden had prior to the war years. It was decided that having a marine festival of some sort would be appropriate. Having it become an annual affair was intentional from the beginning.
